The concept of Anuvrata was advocated by Jainism. The five cardinal principles of Jainism, if followed by a monk, is called Mahavrata and if observed by a lay follower, then it is called Anuvrata.
Anuvrata was the five main teachings of Jainism: Ahimsa, Asateya, Aparigraha, Satya, and Brahmacharya. The anuvratas are vows to abstain from violence, falsehood, and stealing; to be content with one’s own wife; and to limit one’s possessions. The other vows are supplementary and meant to strengthen and protect the anuvratas.
