Vardhaman Mahavira left his home and adopted the ascetic life when he was 30 years old. For the next 12 years, he wandered, meditated and practised severe austerities before attaining enlightenment. At the age of 42 years, he attained “Kaivalya”, i.e., the supreme knowledge and final deliverance from the bonds of pleasure. Hence, he was known as Kaivalya (or Kevalin).
